Timing belt and chain replacement in Warsaw
Belt or chain together with the rollers, the tensioner and the water pump, fitted by the factory procedure with camshaft locking tools. Give us the marque, the model and the year and we will read off the VIN which drive you have and when it is genuinely due. You see the quote before the work starts and the photos after it.
What the timing drive is, and why it cannot wait
The timing drive keeps the crankshaft and the camshafts in step. Put plainly: it holds the pistons and the valves to an agreement about who moves when. While that agreement holds, the engine runs. The moment it goes, a piston arrives where a valve is already standing open.
There are two kinds of drive. A belt has a clear replacement interval and is changed as a kit. A chain is designed to last longer, but in practice “lifetime” only means that the manufacturer never published a figure.
On most VAG engines a snapped belt means the valves meet the pistons. That is no longer a belt change, it is a cylinder head rebuild, and it costs several times as much.
Do you have a belt or a chain
It is the first thing we establish, and the answer does not follow from the marque. One Golf bodyshell carries both: the diesel on a belt, the older-generation 1.4 TSI on a chain.
- 1.6 and 2.0 TDI diesels: belt, with a clear interval.
- 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 and 1.5 TSI petrols of the EA211 generation (roughly from 2012): belt.
- 1.2 and 1.4 TSI petrols of the earlier EA111 generation (2005 to 2012): chain.
- 1.8 and 2.0 TSI of the EA888 family: chain.
Both mechanisms are drawn on the left. Switch between them to see the difference: the chain has no toothed belt and no tensioner pulley, but it does have a hydraulic tensioner, shoes and guides. They are repaired differently, and they fail differently.
The list above is about VAG engines, because those are the ones most likely to run a belt. For BMW, Mercedes and Porsche the answer is shorter, and there is a section for it below: there it is almost always a chain.
When to change it: the interval on VAG engines
The manufacturer's interval and what we see on the lift are two different figures. Both are below.
| Engine | Drive | Manufacturer's interval | What we advise |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.6 and 2.0 TDI (EA189, 2008 to 2015) | Belt | 210,000 km or 10 years | 120,000 to 150,000 km |
| 1.6 and 2.0 TDI (EA288, from 2012) | Belt | 210,000 km or 10 years | 120,000 to 150,000 km |
| 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.5 TSI (EA211, from 2012) | Belt | per the service book, usually 180,000 to 210,000 km | do not stretch it past 120,000 km or 6 years |
| 1.2 and 1.4 TSI (EA111, 2005 to 2012) | Chain | no published interval | listen to it from 80,000 to 100,000 km, the tensioner is the weak point here |
| 1.8 and 2.0 TSI (EA888, first and second generation) | Chain | no published interval | check it at every service |
| 1.8 and 2.0 TSI (EA888, third generation, from 2012) | Chain | no published interval | monitor the stretch from the diagnostic data |
The VAG interval moved between model years and differed between markets. We read the exact figure for your car off the VIN, not from a table on the internet. The years in brackets are approximate: the same engine family went into different models at different times. This table describes VAG engines - for BMW and Mercedes we read the interval off the VIN in the same way, here on site.
Mileage is not the only criterion. A belt ages without the kilometres: the rubber hardens with time, with heat and with however long the car stood still. A 2016 car with 90,000 km on it is a candidate on age, not on mileage.
BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Porsche: here it is almost always a chain
The table above describes VAG engines, because those more often run a belt and have an interval figure. On BMW and Mercedes the picture is different: almost the whole current range of both runs a chain, and neither manufacturer publishes a replacement interval at all.
For your invoice what matters is not the type of drive but which end of the engine it sits on. On the BMW N47 and M57 diesels, as on Audi's 3.0 TDI, the chain is at the flywheel end: reaching it means taking the gearbox out. That is a different quantity of labour from a belt on a 2.0 TDI, and we tell you the difference before you leave the car, not during.
| Engine | Drive | Which end | What we look at |
|---|---|---|---|
| BMW N47 and N47S (2.0d, 2007 to 2014) | Chain | flywheel end | rattle from cold, camshaft correlation faults |
| BMW M57 (3.0d) | Chain | flywheel end | the same, plus the condition of the guides |
| BMW N20 and N26 (2.0 petrol, 2011 to 2016) | Chain | front | tensioner and guides on the early series |
| BMW B47 and B48 (from 2014) | Chain | front | monitored from the scanner data at every service |
| Mercedes OM651 (2.1d, from 2008) | Chain | front | chain stretch, P0016 and P0017 faults |
| Mercedes M271 (1.8 petrol) | Chain | front | stretch is the known weak point of the series |
| Audi and VW 3.0 TDI V6 | Chain | flywheel end | gearbox comes out, a full day's work |
| Porsche, current petrol engines | Chain | front | replaced on condition, not on mileage |
The years and families are approximate: the same designation went into different models at different times. We read the exact configuration of your car off the VIN here on site. None of these manufacturers publishes a chain replacement interval, so “lifetime” means precisely that there is no figure.
A stretched chain is not necessarily something you can hear. It reads on the scanner as a deviation in the correlation between the camshaft and the crankshaft: a figure in degrees, visible at a service long before the first rattle. That is exactly what we keep factory-level scanners for.
Signs it is already due
- The interval is up, on mileage or on years.
- Noise, whistle or rattle from the front of the engine, especially from cold.
- A metallic chatter for the first few seconds after starting: the classic sign of a stretched chain.
- You bought the car with no paperwork for a change.
- A coolant trail low down at the front: often the water pump, which sits in the same drive.
- The engine has become harder to start, or camshaft position faults have appeared.
More often than not it is not the belt itself that goes first, it is the tensioner or a roller. That is why the kit is changed complete: a new belt on an old roller means coming back again, only on a recovery truck.
What the replacement includes
- The timing belt together with the tensioner and the idler rollers, as a kit.
- The coolant pump, where it sits in the timing drive.
- Coolant and gaskets, where the system had to be opened.
- Fitting by the factory procedure with camshaft locking tools.
- The marks checked after assembly, and a test start.
- Photos: the old parts next to the new ones.
For a chain the set is different: the chain itself, the hydraulic tensioner, the shoes and guides, the cover seal. The job is bigger there, because the drive is buried.
We change the water pump with the belt, and not to pad the invoice. It lives in the same drive, and getting to it separately means taking off half of what has already been taken off.
What it costs and how long it takes
Labour
from 800 zł
parts are charged separately
Time
4-6 hrs
for the slot you booked
Warranty
in the quote
on the labour and on the part, before the work starts
The price above is labour. Parts are costed separately and we show them in the quote as line items, so you can see what you are paying for. You see the total before we start, not after.
How much exactly depends on the engine and on the drive. A diesel on a belt is a predictable job of a few hours. A chain on a TSI with the cover off takes longer and costs more, and we say so up front rather than part way through.
How we do it
By the factory procedure and with camshaft locking tools. That is not a line for a brochure: the locking tools hold the crankshaft and the camshafts in an exact position while the old drive is off. Without them the marks are set by eye, and the engine either loses power or does not start at all.
- The car goes on the lift, the undertray and the drive cover come off.
- The shafts are set to their marks and held with the proper locking tools.
- The kit is replaced: belt, rollers, tensioner, and the water pump where it is due.
- Everything is torqued with a torque wrench to the factory figures.
- The engine is turned over by hand for several revolutions and the marks checked again.
- We start it, check for faults on the scanner, and take the photos.
The timing locking tools for VAG and other marques are our own, so the procedure is the same on a Golf, on an Octavia and on an Audi.
The questions we are asked most
- What does a timing belt change cost in Warsaw
- The labour cost for this service is shown above on this page, and parts are costed as separate lines. You see the exact sum in the quote before the work starts: it depends on the engine, on whether the water pump is being changed, and on which end of the engine the drive sits.
- How long does the replacement take
- A belt on a diesel is 4 to 6 hours. A chain on a TSI takes longer, because the drive cover has to come off. We give you the time before the work starts and hand the car back at the time we agreed.
- Does the water pump have to be changed with the belt
- If the pump sits in the timing drive, we recommend changing it at the same time. Doing it separately later means stripping the same assembly again and paying for the same labour twice.
- What happens if the belt snaps
- On most VAG engines the valves meet the pistons. That is a cylinder head rebuild, and sometimes a replacement engine. Which is exactly why the interval here is not a suggestion.
- I have a chain, does that need changing too
- The manufacturer gives no interval, but a chain is not forever. It stretches, and the tensioner and the shoes are the first to go. A metallic chatter from cold is a reason to come in for diagnostics rather than to wait.
- I bought the car and there is no paperwork for a timing change
- Then we work on the basis that it has not been done. We will inspect the drive, look at the state of the belt and the rollers and tell you straight whether it is still safe to drive. That is cheaper than the consequences of a snapped belt.
- Do you do timing on BMW and Mercedes, or only VW and Škoda
- On every German marque we work with: BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, VW, Škoda and Cupra. We have the camshaft locking tools, the factory data and the scanners for them. On BMW and Mercedes it is more often a chain, and we tell you straight away which end of the engine it sits on, because that is what decides the size of the job.
- Why does a chain on a BMW cost more than a belt on a Golf
- On the N47 and the M57 the chain is at the flywheel end, so the gearbox has to come out. A belt on a 2.0 TDI comes off the front in a few hours. That is one service name and two different quantities of work, which is why we quote after we have looked at the actual car.
- How soon can I come in for a timing change in Warsaw
- We book a specific hour, not “bring it in the morning”. Call or send a request with the marque, the model and the year, and we will tell you when there is a free slot and how long the job takes on your particular engine.
- What warranty is there on a timing replacement
- The warranty on the labour and on the part is stated in the quote before the work starts. It does not limit your statutory rights as a consumer.

Labour and parts on separate lines, before the work starts. You can see what the sum is made of.
- 04
Your yes
Until you have approved it, nothing comes apart.
- 05
Something else turns up
A seized bolt, a worn component next to it. We stop and call, we do not add it to the invoice.
